Hemoglobin (HGB, Hb)
Hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying protein in red blood cells, is a
key marker for detecting anemia, low oxygen levels, and
dehydration. Its concentration directly affects the blood’s ability
to transport oxygen. When analyzed alongside other red blood
cell indices and iron levels, hemoglobin helps identify the cause
and type of anemia.
As anemia is treated, we should expect to see a rise in
hemoglobin levels.
When to run this test:
● Determining degree of anemia and evaluating treatment.
● To screen for dehydration
Range
Units - Male
Units - Female
Conventional
11.1 - 17.5 g/dL
11.1 - 15.9 g/dL
Optimal / Functional 13.9 - 15.8 g/dL
13.2 - 14.5 g/dL
Hematocrit (HCT)
Hematocrit measures the percentage of blood composed of red
blood cells, offering insight into oxygen-carrying capacity and
conditions like anemia or polycythemia. It also serves as an
indirect marker of RBC count and volume.
As anemia is treated, we should also expect to see a rise in
hemoglobin levels.
