Neutrophil Count (Cellular)
Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell that play a key role in
defending the body against bacterial and fever-causing
infections.
As the most abundant and active white blood cells during
inflammation, they serve as a first line of defense by destroying
microbes through phagocytosis.
The main lab test used for this purpose is the Complete Blood
Count (CBC) with differential, one of the most commonly
performed blood tests. It offers a detailed overview of blood
components, including red blood cells, white blood cells, and
platelets.
When combined with a differential, the test also breaks down the
specific types of white blood cells4such as neutrophils,
lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils4providing
deeper insight into immune function and potential health
concerns.
When to use this test:
● To screen the body’s defense system.
● To determine the reason for an increased or decreased total
WBC count.
