2. If your body is iodine-deficient, the iodine is believed to be
absorbed quickly, and the patch will disappear within a few hours.
3. If you have sufficient iodine levels, the patch should last longer,
potentially up to 24 hours.
The correct ways to assess iodine status clinically are through
blood and urine tests, particularly a urinary iodine concentration
(UIC) test.
The most accurate method to assess iodine levels is through a
urinary iodine concentration (UIC) test.
About 90% of the iodine you consume is excreted in urine. By
measuring the iodine concentration in your urine, you can get a
good indication of your recent iodine intake
Interpretation of Results
Less than 100 µg/L: Suggests possible iodine deficiency.
1003199 µg/L: Considered adequate for general adults.
Higher Needs: Pregnant and breastfeeding women have
increased iodine requirements.
Other Testing Methods (Less Common)
Thyroid Blood Tests (such as TSH, free T3/T4): These can indicate
iodine deficiency because the thyroid requires iodine to produce
hormones, but they do not directly measure iodine levels.
Serum (Blood) Iodine Test: Rarely performed because it is less
reliable than urine testing.
